This guy was hanging out by our loop wire. When I approached him he tucked his head between his front legs, I guess he thinks he is poisonous. 

Yellow Ladies slipper Orchid?

I was GPSing today, so I threw my camera in my pack for the ride and was able to get a few shots before getting eaten by the flies. 

Gibson Lake TX Site

Another not very exciting image. I shot this just after starting up the transmitter for the day. We have a test we do (primary pulse test) at the beginning and end of every day to check the synchronization of the transmitter and receiver. In the morning we take two readings about 10 minutes apart, so we have a little break, a good time for a coffee or to take a photo. This TX site is about 20 km in the woods from the main road. It is actually on top of an Eskar, but you really don't get any appreciation of that until you have to walk across it. The area is very sandy with lots of spruice and pine.

On the way in today we saw a Timber Wolf, but He was too fast for me to get a photo. 

A quick walk

Not a very interesting shot, but it does say Timmins! This is the precessing end of one of the mines, it is a short walk up the road from where I am staying. In the foreground you see the edge of a park, with football pitch, baseball diamond, vollyball court, water park and playground that was payed for by the mining company. It is probably built on an old tailings pile, but it is nicer than an old tailings pile! 

Timmins

Well I am in Timmins now, we got in yesterday evening. seems like a nice place. We were laying our first loop today. It was rather hot with a lot of flies, nothing like Labrador, but that was a bit extreme.
Hopefully I'll get the chance t oget some pix soon.

Flatrock

This image goes back a few days. I am hoping to do some serious climbing photography, so I took my wide angle out to flat rock for a look around. Not a very interesting image I know, but that is why I need to get out on the wall.
Last week I went to the gym to get some training for the rope work I need to know to allow me to photograph climbers climbing. I learned how to use ascenders and a Arigri to move up the wall and hopefuly keep up with the climber.
There is apparently a new climbing area that is just being developed on the Southern Avalon, there should be some routed bolted by the time I return from this job and the climbers would like me to doccument these new routes. Should be fun. 

On the road again

I flew into Toronto today and will be picking up a truck and gear from the Crone office tomorrow, then heading out to Timmins.

Well I have ny next posting, I am off to Timmins Ont. tomorrow for 4 weeks. It is a surface job, so I'll walking back and forth on a grid rather than sitting in a tent, so that'll be nice. Not sure about the heat and flies.

Refinary by night

On the way back from Visiting Neil I stoped by the North Atlantic refinary. I have always wanted to shoot this location at night. This was just a recee mission to see what it was like up close and what I'd need if I was to return there. It looks very doable, I just need to get on top of that chain link fence. I figure I'll have to make some sort of fence clinging tripod. 

Tom & Neil trip

Managed to get out for a trip with Neil on wednesday, We went for a hike west of the Burin Peninsula highway. Some very nice country in there. Lots of hills with deep gillies in places. We found a nice patch of tuckermore to stop in and have a brew. 

TX site

One more photo from Lynn Lake. JUst going through my photos, thought this might be interesting. Here you see a low power Pulse EM transmitter site in the foreground. Left to right: DC Generator, Voltage regulator, PEM Transmitter and Clock. You can also see the yellow loop wire, this loop was about 2km around. You also see Jason sitting on the truck and the mine head frame in the distance.
You may wonder why I used the Wide angle lens for this - there was no way I was going to change it with that red dust blowing around.

The Snow has gone

Now that all the snow has gone We see the real colours of Lynn Lake. This is an image of a location where the tailings have flowed into fome woodland. not a very pretty sight, I hope any future work here is a bit less destructive.

We were doing a bore hole on thursday and this little chap came looking around. He sat and watched us for a while before doing a runner. 

Still in Lynn Lake

Still here in Lynn Lak, Making good progress, looks like another two weeks or so here. I was just looking at the website of the exploration company we are working for and it is quite interesting http://www.seymourexploration.com/Exploration/LynnLake.htm Lots there about this wonderful eletromagnetic surveying, hope we come up with the goods for them.

Northern Lights

Another good show last night, Norhtern lights, moon and trees illuminated by street lights, just outside our room. 

100C meets -20C

Well this is what happend when you chuck a cup of boiling water into air at -20C, quite an impressive sight.
Might have another go at this if it gets coold enough again. 

Northern Lights

The big one got away! The northern lights were Amazing the night before last, there were 4 bands like this, but very well defined, they went right across the sky the into a spiral in the north. By the time I got my camera and changed lenses theis is all that was left. They were very bitght, even against the street lights.
I'll keep my eyes open for more, and have my camera ready. 

Back in Lynn Lake

I am back in Lynn Lake now, warmer up here now, up to about 4C in the day, still -18C at night, but better than -30C. I'll post some pix once I take some.

On th road again

I am currently sitting in Halifax Airport, waiting for my flight to Toronto, from thete I'll be heading to Winnipeg and staying there for the night. Tomorrow I'll be heading for Waboden MB by road. I'll stay overnight there then go up to Lynn Lake, it looks like there is about 2 weeks of work up there.
